We'll look at the fascinating roots of ballet with Marius Petipa and the great Italian ballerinas who invented their own dances. San Francisco's Isadora Duncan gave birth to modern dance, paving the way for the legendary Martha Graham, who delved deeply into dance and the psyche. Vaslav Nijinsky collaborated with the greatest musical and artistic geniuses of our time. He, his sister Bronislava Nijinsky, and Diaghilev's Ballet Russes, revolutionized ballet inducing Paris audiences to riot. George Balanchine reinvented ballet into a powerful abstract language opening the door to theatrical dance genius Jerome Robbins. We'll also define great choreography today: Morris, Bausch, Fosse, and more.
